Futuristic Eye - Applying scientific research

Richard Bell - Webmaster

With the launch of the new redesigned website, I wanted to show a futuristic image that may lead to how reduced vision could be implemented and restored in the future.  This futuristic eye image is my interpretation of how scientific research could be used.

At the centre of the pupil is a multicolour image of a retina which picks out the infrared, green and blue reflectance layers.  Surrounding that is an image of stem cells, which have been used extensively within other areas of the body to regenerate new organs, so could be used to regenerate light sensitive cells within the retina.

Moving away from the stem cells are stripes of DNA, a molecule that is DeoxyriboNucleic Acid, which carries the genetic instructions used in the growth, development, functioning and reproduction of all known living organisms and many viruses.

Within the sclera of the eye which has recently been trialled in America, are computer microchips.  These have been implanted in a human eye to help regenerate the electrical signals to improve the perception of light-dark contrasts.

Who knows where research may take us but I hope my interpretation can shed a little light on the subject!
