BARS Council Elections 2021

The British Association of Retinal Screening is run by an elected council of volunteers drawn from a range of roles within the field of diabetic eye screening across the UK. We have six upcoming vacancies on the BARS Council, and are therefore looking for enthusiastic individuals to fill these positions.

As a BARS council member you will be expected to attend four council meetings a year, one of which is at the annual BARS conference. The others are a mix of Teams and/or face to face which are generally held in London, although other locations may be used as required, and your travel expenses will be paid to attend these meetings.

To stand for election to the BARS Council you must be a BARS member resident in the UK and currently working within diabetic eye screening in some capacity, and if successful, you will be elected to council for a period of 3 years. During that time you will have the opportunity to contribute to everything BARS does. That may include helping to organise the annual conference and other events, working to develop our education and training resources, assisting with the production of the Diabetic Eye Journal and suggesting new ways for BARS to support its members. We do our best to utilise council members' particular skills whenever possible, but the main requirement is an enthusiasm and interest in diabetic eye screening, and a willingness to give up your time to help those working within it.

2021 Positions

This year we are looking for members with particular skills to take on the roles of

  • Treasurer - You will deal with the accounts and reconciliation of BARS incomings and expenditures.

  • QA/Failsafe co-ordinator - You will be involved with the failsafe forum and will ensure quality assurance issues are dealt with.

  • Conference co-ordinator - You will assist with the planning and delivery of the annual conference.

  • Two Web/education design skills members - You will assist with education matters and the website.

  • Trainee/student member - for the first time, we are looking to have a trainee/student member who is currently undertaking the health screeners diploma (proof required from your programme).

The support of your manager is important, and if you are successful in the election, BARS will seek their approval before confirming your place on council.
