BARS Council Elections 2020

The British Association of Retinal Screening is run by an elected council of volunteers drawn from a range of roles within the field of diabetic eye screening across the UK.

BARS Council would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote in the recent election, and in particular thank the seven excellent candidates who put themselves forward this year.

Unfortunately, since voting closed, some issues have come to light regarding the election process which appear to have impacted significantly on the voting and may have resulted in the process becoming unfair to those involved. A central aim of the British Association of Retinal Screening is to act with integrity at all times and to treat members equally and fairly in everything we do. It is therefore vital that our election processes are seen to be fair, transparent and unbiased.

Having examined this issue in detail, BARS Council have therefore made the difficult decision to declare this year's election null and void. As a result, no candidates will be elected to Council this year.

We would like to make it clear that this issue is not connected to any of the individual candidates, and this decision is no reflection on them or their suitability as council members. We will be holding elections to BARS Council again next year and would encourage all seven candidates to stand again.

BARS Council would like to apologise to all those affected by this decision for any disappointment and upset this may cause. We will be working hard over the coming year to strengthen our processes and ensure that future council elections are conducted appropriately and the results are fair to all.

In light of these unfortunate events, Bev Tolley has chosen to step down as BARS Chair with immediate effect to allow the association to move forward positively under new leadership. All of us on BARS Council would like to thank Bev for her hard work and outstanding contribution to BARS over recent years.

Kind regards,

BARS Council.
