The 18th Annual BARS Conference

Registration opens at 10:00 hrs on 27 September with tea/coffee followed by lunch at 12:00 hrs. The Conference commences with the Chairman's welcome at 13:00 hrs and day one will finish at 17:00 hrs

The Programme Management Meeting will take place from 10:30 to 12 pm on Thursday 27 September.  This is only for delegates attending the main meeting.  Registration for this meeting is required.  Full details are available here.

Workshops: Following the success of the Slit Lamp Workshops at the BARS 2017 conference, BARS are delighted to announce that they will holding 3 different Practical/Discussion Taster Workshops related to Surveillance, with each session covering the following three areas as follows:

  1. Slit Lamp - Based on the practicalities and techniques of carrying out a fundus examination using a Volk lens.
  2. Widefield Confocal Imaging - This workshop will describe the benefits of a wider field of view and the advantages of confocal imaging in surveillance, particularly for R2 cases to enhance lesions such as IRMA and VB, using an Eidon confocal widefield fundus imaging device.  Grant Duncan (HS-UK) will run this workshop, starting with a short background presentation to include details about other widfield devices such as Optos, followed by some hands-on time to create widefield mosaics for review.
  3. OCT and OCT-A - Focussing on the use of OCT for the detection and management of macular oedema in (early) M1 cases and an introduction to OCTA as a potential tool to monitor non-perfusion in R2 cases.  Grahame Wood (HS-UK) will run this workshop with a brief 5 minute talk to explain the utility of OCT and the potential for OCTA in surveillance, before demonstrating scan capture and review followed by hands-on time.

These taster workshops will commence at 9.00am and finish at 12.00pm on Thursday 27 September, and are intended for people to have a go and learn how they are used in diabetic eye screening surveillance.  The workshop sessions will be 09:00 - 10:00, 10:00 - 11:00 and 11:00 - 12:00 allowing 20 mins for each of the 3 different modalities.  Places are limited to 18 people per hour split into 3 groups of 6, so early booking is advisable.  To book these workshops you must be registered to attend the BARS conference, so please visit the Eventbrite page available by clicking the conference registration link below. A drinks reception is planned from 19:00 hrs with the Gala Dinner at 20:00 hrs.  Disco for entertainment thereafter.

Day two will commence at 09:00 hrs and Conference will end at 13:15 hrs.

A Failsafe Forum will commence at 13:30 hrs for conference attendees only.  This will last until 16:00 hrs.  A fee of £15 will be charged for those attending this meeting (includes a working sandwich lunch). There are 60 places available.  Registration for this forum is required via the conference link below.  Please click here for details.

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists Education Dept/Professional Standards have awarded the meeting 12 CPD points - Category B. This will be beneficial for any Ophthalmologists attending.

BARS Council have worked hard to keep the conference registration costs down this year, and are pleased to announce a price of just £110 for delegates staying in the hotel on the 24hr rate, and for non-residents, £70 for day delegate rate for the Thursday and £60 for day delegate rate for the Friday.  For those not on the 24hr rate/Partners etc who wish to attend the Gala Dinner Drinks Reception/Disco £50.

Accommodation must be booked and paid for separately. The conference will take place at the Marriott Hotel City Centre, 2 Lower Castle St, Bristol BS1 3AD and BARS has reserved 135 rooms at a special discounted rate of £173 for the 24-hour single occupancy package and £248 for twin occupancy. These prices include lunch and the evening gala dinner on the Thursday, plus breakfast on the Friday.

The 2018 BARS/Topcon GB Photography Competition

Entry is now open for the 2018 BARS Photography Competition, kindly sponsored by Topcon GB Ltd.  Once again there are two categories - clinical and artistic - and two prizes of an Apple iPad mini for each category.  Entry is FREE, open to anyone and you do not have to attend conference.  For full details please see the competition flyer in the resources section of the website by scrolling down the page.
