Shirley Burnett

BARS Council are sad to announce that Shirley Burnett has passed away after a short illness.

Shirley was a member of BARS' inaugural council and served as the Association's Chair from 2005 until 2007. During this time she was a key member of the expert reference group responsible for developing what was to become the City & Guilds Diploma in Diabetic Retinopathy Screening. Shirley came from a nursing background and for many years managed a screening service in North London. On her retirement, Shirley was awarded a Life Membership of BARS, in recognition of her contribution to the Association.

Grant Duncan, former BARS Chair, who took over that role from Shirley said “I was very sad to receive this news about Shirley, she was a lovely lady who cared deeply about the profession and the people working within it. She was instrumental in securing an educational pathway for those involved in screening and, as a long term member of BARS council, worked tirelessly to raise the profile of diabetic eye screening in the UK”.

Our condolences are with Shirley's family and friends.

The BARS Website Design Competition 2017

The winner of the BARS Website Design Competition 2017 is Vicki Prior - Grading Manager/Senior ROG Grader from Health Intelligence, Cheshire.  The standard of entries was extremely high and the ideas expressed were beyond what we were expecting.  Vicki's design was clean, uncluttered and had a modern feel to it which will be easier to navigate around.  Vicki will be presented with an Apple iPad Mini 2 along with a free complimentary place at this year's BARS Conference in Leeds. BARS Council will be launching the new website at the conference where members will be able to experience the new design.  Thank you to everyone who entered the competition.

***IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT***

You can now join BARS for free!

At the beginning of this year, BARS Council proposed a change to the association's constitution to allow for the annual membership fee to be abolished. BARS members voted overwhelmingly in favour of this proposal, and following an Extraordinary General Meeting on 6th February 2015, the change has been approved. This means that from 1st April 2015, there has been no charge to become an active member of the British Association of Retinal Screening. For more information about this change, and to join BARS for free, please visit the Membership page.
